Shirley Williams: Forces of Nature

December 4, 2010 – February 27, 2011

Shirley Williams atmospheric works on canvas reference for many, the sense of the horizon. The horizon acts as a constant, continuous and familiar space which follows us continuously and despite its inaccessible location is comforting in its familiarity.

As a small child, Williams moved often and it was the consistency of the horizon line whizzing past her childhood eyes, that remained a constant and presents itself today in her purely abstract works. These highly textured paintings reflect this sense of the familiar while still maintaining the allusive and suggestive air that serves abstract artists so well

Shirley Williams: "My work is about movement and impression -- about how we see in a constant stream of glimpses, interpreting what we experience through our own filters. These paintings merely suggest landscape and are not representational of a particular memory. They are meant to explore the abstract ideas of opposites: movement and stillness, distant and near, above and below, seeing and feeling, control and freedom."
